Empowering Financial Futures
We believe every client is a universe of one. Our commitment to clients is guided by our values, unconflicted by external public shareholders, and driven by an enduring pursuit of fiduciary excellence.
The Glenmede Difference – Balance of Strength & Scale
Privately owned and independent, we possess the institutional scale and cutting-edge resources to provide a wide range of complex solutions, paired with the agility to forge personal and enduring relationships.
A Fiduciary Purpose Established in Perpetuity
The Glenmede Trust Company was founded in 1956 for one profound purpose: to serve in perpetuity as Trustee and Administrator of The Pew Memorial Trust, the initial funding source for the non-profit institution now globally known as The Pew Charitable Trusts.
This bold charter required two vital qualities that continue to define us: an everlasting commitment to fiduciary integrity and the institutional longevity to fulfill our duties across centuries. Over seven decades, we have maintained those foundational principles while expanding our capabilities to serve families, family offices, endowments, and business entrepreneurs across the United States.
Our Guiding Values
Our corporate values are not static marketing statements; they dictate how we manage portfolios, interact with our colleagues, and protect client assets every day.
Accountability
Exceptional performance is an unwavering obligation that everyone at Glenmede owes to our clients, colleagues, and communities. We hold ourselves to the highest fiduciary benchmark in every transaction and administrative decision.
Agility
Client-focused and forward-thinking, we unite across specialized planning disciplines to respond to evolving market dislocations, legislative tax reforms, and emerging generational needs.
Integrity
Our unwavering principles are guided by absolute honesty and transparency. With no investment banking conflicts, proprietary brokerage quotas, or public shareholder pressures, our reputation is built purely on trust.
Our Evolutionary History
Explore how Glenmede grew from a dedicated family trust office into a nationwide wealth management institution.
Foundation by the Pew Family
The Glenmede Trust Company was established in Philadelphia by the four children of Sun Oil Company founder Joseph N. Pew: J. Howard Pew, Mary Ethel Pew, Joseph N. Pew Jr., and Mabel Pew Myrin. The firm was charter-built to serve in perpetuity as sole trustee and administrator of The Pew Memorial Trust, the cornerstone funding vehicle for The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Expansion to External Families & Institutions
Recognizing that the institutional-grade fiduciary infrastructure developed for the Pew trusts could benefit other families, Glenmede expanded its mandate. We introduced comprehensive wealth advisory capabilities, including specialized tax return preparation, philanthropic consulting, and goals-based estate planning.
Pioneering Global Multi-Asset Diversification
Anticipating our clients' need to protect purchasing power and diversify concentrated domestic equity portfolios, Glenmede was an early adopter of international equity and global fixed income strategies, establishing core-satellite diversification principles.
Open Architecture & Regional Growth
Glenmede transitioned to an open-architecture platform, pairing proprietary investment strategies with vetted external managers. We launched private equity, hedge fund platforms, and a proprietary venture capital fund. We expanded regional offices into Princeton, NJ, Northern NJ (Florham Park), Wilmington, DE, and Cleveland, OH.
Quantitative Modeling & Institutional Division
Introduced quantitative modeling to enhance portfolio risk management. Established Glenmede Investment Management LP (GIM) to distribute mutual funds and SMAs to institutional clients. Formalized dedicated Endowments & Foundations and Private Wealth divisions.
East Coast Expansion & Sustainable Investing
Opened regional offices in Midtown Manhattan (New York, NY), Washington, DC, and Palm Beach, Florida. In 2014, formally established our dedicated Sustainable Investing practice group to align client portfolios with environmental, social, and mission objectives.
Pittsburgh Expansion & $53.0B AUM Milestone
Established a regional Private Wealth office in Pittsburgh, PA, to serve industrial legacy wealth and regional foundations. Integrated digital client experience portals (GlenmedeConnect) while surpassing $53.0 billion in total client assets under management.
